← Melon Road
We’ve been exploring how a car park in Peckham can become a catalyst for local enterprise. Working with Southwark Council, we have defined a brief that looks beyond traditional office models to imagine a workspace rooted in community, creativity and opportunity.
Where a conventional office might rely on deep-plan floors and sealed glass façades, our capacity study takes a different approach. The test proposal rethinks how people work together, replacing inward-facing cores with generous but cost effective external decks and shared terraces that bring movement and life to the building’s edge. These don’t have to be mechanically serviced and the inhabited walkways create informal places for exchange, blurring the boundary between workspace and public realm.
Inside, a clear grid, generous dual-aspect units and clear, efficient circulation provide flexibility for a range of uses, from start-ups and makers to established small enterprises. The ground floor is activated by public-facing units, putting eyes on the street and helping to reduce antisocial behaviour while strengthening the relationship between workspace and neighbourhood.
Designed to balance ambition with practicality, the Melon Road proposal sets out a vision for an inclusive, future-facing workspace that can grow with its community and contribute to Peckham’s ongoing story of creativity and enterprise.
