Our brief for this project was to reimagine a former shop in Bethnal Green to create a bright, open plan two bedroom home and workspace.

Forming part of a historic terrace in the Hackney Road Conservation Area, we retained the original façade and extensively remodelled the interior, adding a new floor set back from the road, accessed by a compact plywood staircase.

Built in storage solutions, sliding partitions and simple plywood joinery maintain a light and airy feel throughout. Externally a series of private outdoor spaces are created including a generous sheltered roof terrace.

The project was created at one of the busiest road junctions in East London with a very narrow pavement, meaning construction had to be carefully considered and managed within the tight site constraints.
