← Kinnerton Street
On a quiet street in Belgravia, the dark brick exterior of a historic Georgian mews conceals a new bright minimal interior of a contemporary family home. The brief from our clients was to update and reconfigure the building for modern living. As it was, the layout featured a series of compromised spaces, uncomfortable access between rooms, restricted head height at lower ground floor and an unsympathetic conservatory addition with an awkward stair arrangement.
In order to restore a sense of continuity and legibility to the spaces two fundamental changes were proposed. The first was to move the main stairs into the existing rear extension wing, freeing up the plan and maximising front to back connectivity. The second was to create a new double height extension in the rear courtyard, allowing natural light to flood deep into the centre of the home and reinforcing the connection between living, kitchen and dining spaces.
Together with the client a light and sparse material palette was chosen which compliments the more defined volumes of the interior.
