Together with Studio Egret West we have been working closely with Lewisham Council, developing this new vision that includes new homes, workspace and a cultural centre in mixed-use urban blocks.

We engaged with Catford’s very diverse and active community by taking over an empty shop unit which allowed local people to drop in to follow the progress and attend our events. To compliment this we established a CommonPlace digital engagement platform as tools to reach as wide an audience as possible.

The design process started by developing a micro-plan looking at how the existing uses in the neighbourhood could be accommodated in the longer term vision for the sites. We also mapped existing underused or vacant spaces and proposed pilot or incubator uses for them.

This framework has gained consensus following decades of failed attempts to create a plan for the area. It includes a new civic centre for the council, revamped theatre, school, retail, workspace and at least 2,500 new homes on council land.

The project was adopted as a new Planning SPD by Lewisham Council in 2021. One of the first sites to be commissioned is the Turner Works design for Thomas Lane Yard - a housing led mixed use development in Catford town centre. →
