Castle Square is a meanwhile project designed to deliver much-needed local independent retail space to the fast-moving Elephant and Castle redevelopment. Providing over 5000 sqm of commercial space, Castle Square contributes to a broader vision for the site as a destination where people spend time rather than just pass through.

Focusing on sheltering the square from the elements allowed us to create a comfortable, active public space capable of hosting outdoor events. We achieved this by introducing an L-shape of two and three-storey blocks to the West and South boundaries of the site. These blocks sit apart at street level to form a gateway into the square, drawing people through Castle Square and into Elephant Park. To connect back to Elephant Road, large windows into the shops create an active and inviting street frontage.

Formed from prefabricated modules, our construction methodology was driven by a designed-for-disassembly approach. Castle Squares' simple steel structure and clean larch cladding ensured efficient assembly and will enable easy disassembly at the end of its seven-year lifespan on site.

To ensure local businesses were at the heart of Castle Square, the 21 units were first offered to the tenants of the Elephant and Castle shopping centre who wished to stay in the local area during its redevelopment.
